Sam has a craniofacial condition called Treacher Collins Syndrome (TCS). For Sam in particular this means he was born with a cleft palate, small lower jaw, no ears, minimal cheek bones, and notched eyelids. Sam sees about 12 doctors on a regular basis, has 6 therapists, 5 nurses, and will probably have 10-25 surgeries. Although on the small side, Sam is cognitively & physically developing right on track.

Treacher Collins Syndrome

Treacher Collins syndrome (TCS) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by craniofacial deformities. It is found in 1 in 10,000 births. The typical physical features include downward slanting eyes, micrognathia (a small lower jaw), conductive hearing loss, underdeveloped zygoma, drooping part of the lateral lower eyelids, and malformed or absent ears. TCS does not affect cognitive (brain/learning) development or physical development. Thanks wikipedia.
